A Gold Coast man held down and choked his partner – it was the third time he beat a woman and the second time he tried to strangle someone.

A SERIAL domestic violence pest held a woman down and choked her in front of her toddler.

She was the third partner Matthew James Boys had beaten — and the second woman he had tried to strangle.

The 35-year-old also refused to let the woman have any friends, use social media or own a mobile phone.

Boys will be out of prison by Christmas after he pleaded guilty in the Southport District Court to choking, making threats and two counts of common assault.

Judge David Kent sentenced him to three years prison to be placed on parole on November 25.

Boys has been in custody since the incident on November 24 last year.

“Domestic violence like this needs to be denounced in the strongest terms,” he said.

Crown prosecutor Jessica Guy said Boys and his partner of 10 months began to argue in their Labrador home after Boys said he wanted to go fishing and the woman objected.

The argument turned violent and as the woman walked out of the bedroom, Boys grabbed her by the hands and threw her on the floor and squeezed her neck for 10 to 15 seconds.

Ms Guy said the woman was able to bring her right leg up to push on his chest in order to get Boys off her.

The woman ran to her one-year-old child and as they went to leave he splashed them with alcohol.

Ms Guy said the woman ran and as she did Boys yelled: “If you ruin my chances of seeing my son I will kill you.”

The woman managed to get outside and found a payphone to call police, the court was told.

“This is the third partner he has inflicted violence on and this is the second time he has placed his hands around the neck of a domestic partner,” she said.

The court was told Boys had also previously taken part in domestic violence prevention programs.

Defence barrister James McNab said Boys had a “tragic” childhood involving the death of an uncle and a social worker.
He said Boys had a problem with alcohol.

“It was almost a watershed moment and he doesn’t want this offending to keep him in jail … this period in custody has been quite difficult,” he said.

Mr McNab said during the lockdown in prison Boys had been playing cards with his cellmate and drawing.
