Probe into double drowning on Gold Coast

A body boarder has died after being pulled from the water near some of Gold Coast’s world famous surf breaks, the same day the city’s southern beaches reopened to the public.

Early reports suggested boardriders discovered the man face down in the water about 9am off McDonald St at Coolangatta.

Queensland Ambulance Gold Coast senior operations supervisor Adam Flory said it appeared the man hit a sandbank while boogie boarding at Greenmount.

“When we arrived on scene the Gold Coast City lifeguards were doing CPR on the beach with a 50-year-old male,” he said.

“What’s believed to have occurred, is this person has hit a sandbank and has become unconscious and was pulled from the surf.

“We had some bystanders that saw the incident occur who immediately reacted and pulled him out of the water and then were assisted by GCCC lifeguards.”

Council’s chief lifeguard Chris Maynard told the Bulletin lifesavers commenced CPR immediately, trying in vain to revive the man in cardiac arrest.

Multiple crews from NSW Ambulance and Queensland Ambulance including critical care paramedics joined attempts to resuscitate the man.

It comes after Gold Coast beaches were in recent days slammed with giant surf, at times reaching up to six metres high as result of ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman Helen Reid said: “(Waves have been about) generally two metres high but has picked up to three metres,” she said.

“The wave height has gotten up to 6 metres in the past couple of days.”

Northern beaches remain closed as another king tide approaches, however, beaches south of Burleigh reopened on Wednesday morning.

Despite the surf currently appearing “quite clean and small,” Mr Flory urged beach-goers to remain vigilant when entering the water.

“The surf is actually quite small compared to what it’s been over the last couple of days,” he said. “... At the moment it’s quite clean and small.”

“Take the advice from the experts, stay safe and look after your mates.”

It follows last month’s tragedy in which talented young jockey Chris Caserta drowned at Surfers Paradise after being swept out to sea in a late-night swim.

A three-year-old boy also died in a Christmas Eve tragedy at Labrador’s Ian Dipple Lagoon.

National drownings increased 20 per cent up to 294 deaths in 2021.

Sixty six of those deaths were in Queensland, and 99 in New South Wales.

In total there were 968 drowning incidents, 674 were non-fatal.
