'It's a monster': Wild weather lashes Gold Coast

It looks like we’ll be gorging on seafood and snapping our bonbons indoors this Christmas, despite some blue skies.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s (BOM) Helen Kirkup said there was an 80 per cent chance of rainfall and thunderstorms on Christmas Day, which would intensify from midday and throughout the afternoon.

It was expected to see a top of 28 degrees and 5-15mm of rain.

Swellnet updated their surf report at 9am on Christmas Day and said it was the perfect day for a paddle.

“(The surf) was clean and small, you may get slightly bigger surf at south swell magnets,” they said.

“The wind is forecast to strengthen to a moderate south-easterly by midday to then decrease to a gentle east-southeast by the end of the day.”

The Gold Coast is set for a wet 25th for the third year in a row.

The beach cricket set will surely gather more dust in the shed because according to weather experts, they’ve pulled up stumps over the chance of sunshine.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s (BOM) Helen Kirkup urged Gold Coasters to lap up the warm blue-sky weather while it lasted as Thursday afternoon would see an “unstable build-up” which could bring significant thunderstorms and rainfall bucketing down over the city.

“Moving into Thursday afternoon and Friday we are forecasting a burst of heavy rainfall and potential thunderstorms,” she said.

“There’s a noticeable trough moving across from the west and combined with daytime heating and the energy of a southerly wind moving up the coast we could see a trigger event for storms.”

Ms Kirkup said there was an 80 per cent chance of rainfall and thunderstorms on Christmas Day, which would intensify from midday and throughout the afternoon.

Saturday is expected to see a top of 28 degrees and 5-15mm of rain.

Maddix McLennan, along with her two friends Kayla McMillan and Rachel Harris, said they were “praying to the weather gods” for sunshine on Saturday.

“It’s a family tradition to come down to the beach every Christmas and then head home for a big family lunch,” she said.

“This year we are setting up a backyard water slide so I suppose it doesn’t really matter if it’s raining anyway, but some warm sunshine would be nice.

“It’s much nicer to eat outdoors and to see everyone getting into backyard games and fun in the sun.”
