A Gold Coast construction worker who allegedly attacked an elderly man with an axe in an “out of character” moment has been granted bail.

Labrador man Myrent John Henare, 61, has been charged with serious assault of a person over 60 and going armed so as to cause fear after he got into an argument with Robert John McRobertson, 74, about 2pm on Sunday.

Mr McRobertson suffered injuries from an axe during an alleged altercation at an address on Jimmieson Ave at Labrador, a Queensland Police Service spokesman said.

Myrent appeared via videolink in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday to apply for bail.

Police opposed his bail application.

Defence barrister James Grehan, of Legal Aid Queensland, said Myrent had no criminal history and the incident was “out of character” for the 61-year-old.

Mr Grehan said Myrent had invited Mr McRobertson into his home and both of them were “intoxicated” when the alleged attack occurred.

Robert John McRobertson, 74, was allegedly attacked with the axe about 2pm on Sunday.

There were no other witnesses to the incident.

Magistrate Janice Crawford said the allegations against Myrent were “quite serious”.

She granted Myrent bail, taking into account his age and lack of criminal history.

Under bail conditions, Myrent has to live at his current address in Labrador and have no contact with Mr McRobertson, who remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Myrent is required to appear in court when his matter is heard again on June 14.
