Resident fights off home invader with baseball bat

May 17: A Gold Coast man who bravely fought off a home invader with a baseball bat has been badly injured after the crook ran over his foot with a car stolen from the residence.

Queensland Police Service detectives have appealed for public assistance to track down the thief, who broke into the Woodstock Court, Parkwood home about 11pm on Monday.

The man took the keys to a vehicle at the residence before “threatening the male occupant and fleeing the home”.

“The occupant armed himself with a baseball bat and attempted to stop the man driving off,” a police statement read.

“Following a short struggle, the occupant struck his vehicle with the bat, causing the driver’s side mirror to fall off and the windscreen to break.

“The man fled in the vehicle, running over the occupant’s foot, causing a significant and serious injury.”

The resident, a man aged in his 40s, suffered a foot injury and was taken to Robina Hospital in a stable condition, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed.

The stolen vehicle, a black 2007 Holden Captiva station wagon, was found abandoned at Chichester Dr, Arundel just before 1am on Tuesday.

Investigators have appealed for residents and businesses in Parkwood and Arundel to come forward with any relevant CCTV or dashcam vision picturing the Holden, or the offender.

The thief was described by police as Pacific Islander in appearance with a solid build, wearing a navy blue cap and a surgical mask.

Police can also be contacted anonymously “regarding the man’s identity”.

Bouncer ‘crash tackled’ in alleged Irish pub attack

May 9: Police have charged two men and banned them from the Gold Coast Safe Night Precinct after a security guard was allegedly “crash tackled” and a melee spilt inside the bar at Waxy’s Irish Pub.

The “highly intoxicated” 29-year-old Pimpama man and 31-year-old man from Coorparoo at Brisbane tried to enter the Surfers Paradise Blvd, Surfers Paradise venue about 8.30pm on Sunday, a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said.

The pair allegedly set upon the 42-year-old bouncer when they were “refused entry” under responsible service of alcohol regulations.

“They didn’t like that, so they assaulted the security guard at the entry, on the door. They crash tackled him and it spilt into the bar area,” the spokeswoman said.

“They were wrestling with him and another member of staff became involved as well.”

The spokeswoman said a “few patrons” at the Irish pub jumped into the fray to pull the attackers off the workers.

“The two guys left and were arrested by police nearby,” she said.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics, including the High Acuity Response Unit, were called to Surfers Paradise Boulevard, according to a statement.

They took the security guard to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition suffering from “head and neck injuries”.

It’s not clear if worker who assisted the bouncer, a 39-year-old man, was injured in the fracas.

The Pimpama man and the Coorparoo man have both been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm in company and refusing entry to premises (which can arise if a person attempts to enter licenced premises despite being refused entry).

The accused are due to face court at a later date.
