Coronavirus: Breakthrough in COVID-19 vaccine trials

A MUM who made an emergency flight to the UK to be with her critically injured son has seen him for the first time.

Gold Coasters helped raised more than $20,000 in just 24 hours last week to help Erika Perry fly to her son Jake’s bedside after the was attacked in a small town in the UK.

Because of bleeding on the brain the 24-year-old has remained in a coma. However, his family said doctors were hopeful Jake would awaken soon.

“We’re told that Jake’s condition is still tenuous,” the family wrote. “However it would appear as if the brain swelling has reduced to a point where the doctors have decided that it’s time to try and gradually ‘encourage’ him out of his induced coma.

“That process can take several days or more and has already started.”

The young father, who moved to the UK to be with his three-year-old daughter, is still suffering from other complications including a mild case of pneumonia and no has signs of motor function at this stage.

“The advice of the doctors right now suggests Jake will undoubtedly suffer from some form of disability, the only question will be how serious this will be,” the family said.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Ms Perry is only able to visit her son for a short time each day.

“I can assure you the one hour she had was worth every minute to her,” the family wrote.

“Again, we can’t begin to thank everyone enough for the kindness they’ve shown in making this happen.”

In order to raise the funds to be with him at such short notice, Ms Perry made an emotional plea for assistance on GoFundMe.

Speaking through tears, the single mother talked about her “loving son”, who she said is a great father.

Mr Perry had allegedly been violently assaulted by three men while walking home in Alton, Hampshire.

He sustained severe head injuries due to blunt force trauma during the attack.

“We have been living on the opposite side of the world for three years,” Ms Perry said in a video she posted online.

“When he arrived to hospital a massive haematoma was found, which caused significant brain swelling and bleeding on the brain.

The Australian consulate was able to assist in arranging the flight for Ms Perry on Thursday, who sought special permission to travel due to the current ban on all overseas travel from Australia.

The United Kingdom is currently listed as a code red country via smart traveller due to the virus.

Those who travel to the UK are expected to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival.

Ms Perry later thanked those that helped her secure the vital flight.

“I cannot explain how grateful I am, or how much this restores my faith in humanity,” she said.

“All of this has happened so quickly that I could never have imagined it would be possible, but thanks to all those very special people who have helped me through the last 48hrs, it does look like I will be able to see my son.”

It is understood three men have been arrested by UK police in relation to the attack.
