A LABOURER who fled police at the Gold Coast Airport border checkpoint claims he panicked because he did not know a warrant was out for him.
Kodi Ned Brown ran into a nearby home and stole some clothes in an attempt to stop police from following him.
The 24-year-old’s flight from police on July 27 this year was captured by a Gold Coast Bulletin photographer.
Brown pleaded guilty in the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday to entering a premises to commit an indictable offence and obstructing police.
Magistrate Pam Dowse sentenced him to six months prison with immediate parole eligibility.
Brown has been in custody since July.
“You can see that the use of drugs is going to take you nowhere except to prison,” she said.
“What a waste for you.”
Magistrate Dowse told Brown that drugs “wrecks everything in your life” and that it was a “stupid idea”.
She then wished him luck.
Prosecutor Donn Reid said Brown had arrived at the COVID checkpoint and was told by police a return to prison warrant was out for him.
Brown was sentenced in 2018 to three years prison for drug trafficking.
After being told about the warrant Brown fled, entered a nearby home and stole clothes, including a watch, before running again.
Defence solicitor Sarah Jowitt, of Legal Aid Queensland, said Brown panicked when he was told about the return to prison warrant.
“He didn’t want to go to jail,” she said.
Ms Jowitt said Brown had written a letter of apology to the person whose home he broke into.
Brown plans to live with his mother on the Gold Coast when he is released from prison.
The expiry date of Brown’s trafficking sentence is July next year.
