A “PRESTIGIOUS” Gold Coast brothel which recently underwent more than $100,000 in renovations has been destroyed by a “suspicious” fire.

Authorities were called to the large blaze at Silks at Upton at Bundall about 4.30am Tuesday, about 30 minutes after closing.

The building was “well engulfed” by the time emergency services arrived.

Police said no one was inside at the time, but the blaze gutted the brothel causing the front of the building to collapse.

The brothel was on Tuesday a crime scene and guarded by police, as detectives spoke to a group of women and a man.

Police are treating the fire has suspicious.

Silks on Upton describes itself as “Gold Coast’s Number 1 premier brothel”.

The brothel only opened back up to the public in July after a brief hiatus during COVID-19 government restrictions.

While announcing the reopening, owner Katherine Hammond told the Bulletin the brothel was anticipating “pent-up demand” and tens of thousands of dollars had been invested during the closure.

“We took advantage of being closed to complete a complete overhaul of our premises, in excess of $100,000, including new themed rooms,” Mrs Hammond said in July.

She said at the time “there was plenty of pent-up demand out there”.

“There’s not a day we don’t have to tell someone in the car park that we’re not open.”

The brothel’s owners were contacted for comment on Tuesday.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency spokeswoman said the blaze was out just before 6am and the scene had been handed over to police.

It’s believed the fire started in the front left-hand side of the building.

A nearby worker said he arrived at work about 5.30am to emergency services and the road was closed to traffic.

He said he had heard the fire “was pretty intense”.

The brothel describes itself as having a “a first-class line up, of the finest national and international in-house escorts” which offered a “wide range of services”.

“If you’re looking for sensual pleasure and satisfaction, then a visit to Gold Coast’s most prestigious bordello is a must,” it’s website says.

Police are now investigating the cause of the blaze.

“Anyone with vision or further information which could assist the investigation is urged to contact police,” a statement said.
