HOTA gallery opening: Hundreds of Gold Coasters flood through the doors for gallery launch.

“Our degustation menus are inspired by the major art exhibitions in the gallery, with the first menu relating to HOTA’s Solid Gold exhibit so that guests can see their favourite pieces of art come to life on the plate,” he said.

“The Darling Downs vegetables in variations emulates the artist Mimi Dennett to have the same flowers and plants growing as what is featured in her piece, Bloom,” said Dayan.

Massive new art installation turns heads at HOTA

A GIANT globe has been suspended in our city’s cultural heart.

The installation, called Gaia, planet earth, is orbiting Home of the Arts’ outdoor stage to mark the launch of 11-day live program, Wonder.

Creator Luke Jerram said his interest in science and engineering was reflected in his art.

“In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the artwork may provide the viewer with a new perspective of our place on the planet; a sense that societies of the earth are all interconnected and that we have a responsibility toward one another,” he said.

“For our entire human existence we have been gazing up at the moon and projecting all our hopes, dreams and wishes up there, whereas it was only in 1968 that we were able to see our planet floating in space.”

HOTA CEO Criena Gehrke said her team was prepared to handle the art festival within COVID-19 guidelines.

She said, while restrictions had severely affected the entire arts sector, they had “seen some light through the tunnel”.

“There has been advantages to it as local and rural artists are now being showcased,” she said.

“You don’t call yourself a home of the arts and not absolutely love local artists presenting beautiful work to audiences.”

Ms Gehrke said the Gaia installation gives the public the perfect opportunity to self-reflect.

“We would be well advised as a society to look to our artists to lead us out of (the pandemic) because they are the people that tell our stories and bring us together as humans,” she said.

Ms Gehrke said bookings for Wonder were strong and she was confident people were going to enjoy the event.

“It is really a gift to the Gold Coast, this installation, and I really encourage people to come and look,” she said.

WONDER runs October 1 to 11 and will feature five different programs including the Sounds of Wanderlust, Return to Earth, Kids Take Over, Here, Here, and The Birth and Death of Stars.
