The Gold Coast will get its first taste of summer weather for 2022 while parts of Queensland brace for another cyclone.

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth unleashed an extraordinary final blast on the weekend, delivering 673mm of rain from Friday night into Saturday morning in Marodian northwest of Gympie on the Fraser Coast, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

It caused rivers to rise and many roads – including the Bruce Highway – to be closed in the region - with one person killed and one missing at deadline.

The force of Seth caused huge swell off Gold Coast beaches last week but the city didn’t cop mother nature’s full force with Southport recording less than 1mm of rain in the same period, according to BOM.

A fresh cyclone threat bears down on the state’s north but BOM meteorologist Livio Regano said the Gold Coast was forecast to be in the clear.

“Sunday was the last day of a period of heavy cloud cover, so we should see things clear up from Monday and the Gold Coast will get its normal summer,” he said.

“Temperatures from Monday to Wednesday are predicted to be in the high 20s with warm nights.

“The humidity is predicted to stick around with some showers possible throughout the week but it should be mainly dry with some cloud cover.”

What’s the weather for Magic Millions Polo?

January 8, 2021

The Gold Coast is unlikely to see the torrential rains which have battered the Wide Bay area overnight.

The return of the Magic Millions Polo on Sunday is not going to be all clear skies with clouds and showers in the area, according to Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Helen Reid.

“At this stage we are not expecting the torrential rains to go further south,” she said.

Ms Reid said the Gold Coast with showers and cloud cover to stay in the Gold Coast area on Sunday and throughout the first part of the Magic Millions sales.

“There will be no clear blue skies until midweek,” she said.

Only a millimetre or two of rain is expected to fall on the Gold Coast on Sunday with temperatures in the high 20s.

The humidity is likely to remain high.

Clean-up efforts after the high swells caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth are continuing across the city, particularly in the southern areas.

The Wide Bay area – which includes Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Maryborough and Gympie – was in clean-up mode on Saturday after 650mm fell in just 24 hours.

Parts of the Bruce Highway were closed and emergency services received more than 20 calls for help.
