A TALLAI man was only two steps away from disaster when a car came ploughing through a general store on Sunday morning.

The elderly man had accidentally pressed the accelerator after stopping his car outside the Tallai General Store about 9.15am.

The store’s owner Carl Schuetze was “absolutely shocked” that no one was injured in the crash.

“There was a guy walking down when it came in and I reckon another two steps and it would have been disaster,” he said.

Mr Schuetze said the man narrowly missed having a heavy ATM fall on him.

He said he thinks the crash caused between $20,000 to $30,000 in damage but insurance assessors are yet to visit the site.

The store has been closed since the crash but Mr Schuetze hopes to re-open on Monday morning.

The community was rallying around the store, including Mudgeeraba MP Ros Bates who had a learner driver crash into her electorate office last month.

“Oh dear Carl, Glad everyone is ok. Know how it feels,” Ms Bates wrote on Facebook.

Police are aware of the crash but no charges will be laid.
