The faces of Queensland's shocking road toll

IT was a deadly day on Gold Coast roads on Sunday after two motorcyclists were killed in separate head-on crashes, while another was left seriously injured.

The impact of one crash was so severe it is believed a vehicle involved caught on fire, with the flames spreading to nearby grass.

Authorities were called to the first incident on Nerang Murwillumbah Rd near Advancetown – a notorious stretch of road in the Gold Coast Hinterland – about 9.50am Sunday after reports a motorbike and small truck had collided.

A Tallai man, 26, died at the scene.

It’s the same road where four teenagers died in a horror smash on July 25.

Later in the afternoon, emergency services rushed to the scene of another collision involving a motorbike on Pimpama Jacobs Well Rd at about 4.45pm. The ute and motorcycle involved caught alight on impact, with the fire spreading to nearby grass.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said the size of the fire was not known, however it was put out soon after. Crews remained on scene to clear debris from the road.

The motorbike rider, a 54 year-old man from Pimpama, sustained significant injuries in the crash and died at the scene.

The 49-year-old male driver of the four-wheel-drive did not sustain serious injury but was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital for assessment.

In another motorcycle crash, a man suffered significant leg injuries after being thrown from his bike at Parkwood about 2.30pm.

He was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

There have been 36 road deaths in the Gold Coast and Logan police districts up until November 15, according to the latest data supplied by the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Shockingly, seven road deaths on the Gold Coast were a result of just two crashes.

There was 13 deaths in the same period last year.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating both crashes.
