The man at the centre of the almost 20 hour siege on the Gold Coast had screwed the door shut to his townhouse.

The siege began when police were called to a Jabiru Landing home on Brown Street in Labrador at 2.45pm on Tuesday after a disturbance.

It did not end until tactical police forcibly entered the door about 8.25am on Wednesday.

Police had originally told media the initial call was at 4.30pm on Tuesday.

During the siege residents of Jabiru Landing had to contend with a large portion of the complex being taped off and multiple police, fire crews and paramedics on scene.

The immediate neighbours were evacuated from their homes.

Gold Coast Police Acting Inspector Warren Parker said police were called to a domestic violence matter.

The 46-year-old man, who was alone when police arrived, then refused to leave the home.

Insp Parker said the man did not make any threats to himself or to other people.

“There were reports of a gas bottle inside upon investigations this morning,” he said.

“We have made that area safe.”

He said advice from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services was there was not sufficient gas to “cause an issue”.

Insp Parker said the man made no threats in relation to the gas bottle.

He said no one else was in the home when police arrived at the scene but that the man had screwed the door closed.

Insp Parker said the man “wasn’t making any demands or police”.

Multiple teams of negotiators were seen in the area.

Insp Parker said the man had spoken to them during the night but there were some points where he was silent.

“Our main goal is to take the person into custody,” he said.

“And yes if we have to talk to a person for a lengthy period that’s what we will do.”

The siege ended when specialist police forced their way into the home.

Insp Parker said during the arrest the 46-year-old had been “actually quite courteous” with police.

He said the man is in police custody and uninjured.

Insp Parker said he is likely to face charges including obstructing police.

“My girlfriend lives in the Jabiru Landing complex and she has two young children so it’s obviously quite worrying.

“Something is happening. Looks like a SWAT team has arrived and are huddling around the door.”
