A US-based couple has paid $8.15m for a two-storey penthouse in luxury tower to be built on the Café Dbar site.
It is a record price for a unit or villa south of Mermaid Beach and the most paid for a Gold Coast apartment in more than two years.
Less than a year ago the couple snapped up a luxury unit in the neighbouring $74m Flow Residences tower.

Kerry Pezet, who negotiated the sale, said the buyers were lured by the 360-degree views of Snapper Rocks, Point Danger and the beachfront.
“There’s no doubt this is one of the most spectacular locations anywhere in Australia and, along with the architecture and design, was keenly purchased by a couple currently living in the US but with deep roots on the Gold Coast,” she said.
“The remaining residences are expected to sell quickly once Awaken begins its international marketing campaign in coming weeks.”

More than half of the development’s nine, whole-floor units have sold, just two weeks after Brisbane-based developer Paul Gedoun’s S & S Projects got the green light from council for the luxury 12-storey project.
Mr Gedoun said the remaining four units would be priced from $4m each.
“These are discerning buyers who are attracted by well-designed, spacious and beautifully appointed apartments in one of the most desirable coastal locations on Australia’s eastern seaboard,” he said.

Sale prices average $4.3m, which Mr Gedoun said gave Awaken “one of the highest average sales rates of any boutique apartment project anywhere in Australia”.

Construction of the tower is expected to begin later this year once the existing Cafe Dbar is demolished.
The popular eatery will reopen in the new tower after operators signed a deal with Mr Gedoun this month.
The famous Point Danger site was bought in 2020 for $8m.
Locals opposed to the development held a rally in early May calling on Deputy Premier Steven Miles to overrule council’s planning decision by using his rare call-in powers.
Community activists argue the development is not in line with the neighbourhood’s character.
