Brewers launch bid to make beer pong a sport at the 2032 Olympics

Gold Coast brewers have launched an extraordinary bid to have a classic drinking game become an official sport at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

The team behind the city’s annual Crafted Beer Festival have launched a petition to see beer pong claim a place on the elite international sporting stage, with Gold Coast beer makers and lovers getting onboard.

Festival director Anna Cook said she thought it was “about time” beer pong got the recognition it deserved, citing the intense skill and concentration needed.

“There’s some really skilled people we see playing beer pong every year at the festival, so why not give them a chance to be represented on the stage and when we’ve got our home Olympics in Brisbane in 2032,” she said.

“If there's any sport that represents Australia more than just a casual drink with a competitive nature, then beer pong is it.”

Representing one of several homegrown favourites set to feature at this year’s Crafted, Burleigh Brewing Company’s Brad Doyle said beer pong would be the “perfect Aussie addition” to the Olympics.

“I think there’s more reasons why it should be than why it shouldn’t - for one, it would be an easy gold medal for Australia if we came to play,” he said.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if my number got called.”

Olympics dream aside, Mr Doyle said residents should get excited for Burleigh Brewing’s festival set-up this year.

“We are definitely looking forward to bringing a surprise set up, which is a little bit different to last year ... it’s going to be a good one.”

More than 400 brews will be among the huge array of beverages available at the 2024 festival, including drops from other Gold Coast breweries such as Black Hops, Mdock Beer Brewing Co, and Precinct Brewing.
