One of largest sports bars of its type in Australia will open its doors this weekend, taking over the former home of Surfers Paradise’s iconic Hard Rock Cafe.

The former Hard Rock building has undergone a $6.5 million makeover to become the Sporting Globe Surfers Paradise – the Glitter Strip’s destination hi-tech sports bar and microbrewery.

Construction started in mid-January to transform the site on the corner of Cavill Ave and Surfers Paradise Blvd into a Sporting Globe x 4 Pines Brewery downstairs and dining venue/sports bar upstairs.

Sporting Globe founder and CEO James Sinclair said the collaboration united the best of local brewing with an “iconic” sports fit-out on what once was one of the city’s most famous corners, occupied by the iconic Hard Rock Cafe’s giant street-front guitar.

“The growth of The Sporting Globe has been enormous – this was a natural next play,” he said.

“We’re offering a unique experience that creates a major win for continued efforts to revitalise and re-establish Surfers as the original and true heart of the Gold Coast.”

The Surfers Paradise venue is the third Sporting Globe franchise from brothers Mark and Brad Vigus.

The brothers who also own Sporting Globe Robina and Logan, said they planned to make the flagship Surfers store an epicentre for live entertainment – a homage to its Hard Rock heritage.

“Australia’s love of sport runs deep, and we know the folks of Surfers Paradise will find a loud and like-minded heartbeat right here at The Sporting Globe,” Brad said.

Mark said the pair wanted to fill a gap in the local market for an inclusive, family friendly sporting venue.

The 1480sq m establishment will feature more than 60 high-definition screens including multiple big screens and interactive touchscreen booth TVs with kids games and a full range of sport channels.

Mark said he hoped the venue would become, “the go-to meeting place to watch, listen, eat, drink and be entertained”.

Designed as a “family friendly space” during the day, the venue will then change into a late-night spot with live music and entertainment until 3am.

A central bar with stadium-style screens and wraparound digital screens will feature 80 taps including 14 4 Pines beers made on-site with a large open-air balcony looking out onto Cavill Ave below.

The venue also features a private function room for 150 guests.
