THE Gold Coast’s first new stand-alone five-star hotel in more than 20 years will be built at Burleigh Heads.

Accommodation providers Accor and SBE will build Australia’s first Mondrian hotel on the Gold Coast as part of a dramatic expansion of its holdings across the world.

Mondrian Gold Coast will be a 22-storey twin-tower development planned for the White Horses site on the corer of First Ave and The Esplanade and will feature 208 hotel rooms and 89 luxury residential units.

It will be the Coast's first new five-star luxury hotel since Palazzo Versace opened in September, 2000.

Accor Pacific CEO Simon McGrath said the new luxury hotel would begin construction in the new year and open in mid-2023.

“The expansion of the first-ever Mondrian into Australia, with its location at Burleigh Heads, reflects Accor’s commitment to developing innovative, lifestyle-oriented hotels alongside our partner, SBE,” he said.

“With the Mondrian brand, SBE creates destinations within the destination, bringing together regional authenticity with sophisticated design, creative programming and a lively bar and restaurant scene.

“Mondrian Gold Coast will be the embodiment of this philosophy: providing residents and guests with elevated hospitality experiences that match the beauty and vibrancy of Australia’s Gold Coast region.”

The buildings will be staffed by more than 200 people once open.

The two towers will be joined by a three-level podium which will include a state-of-the-art fitness centre, spa, restaurants, and swimming pools, overlooking the beach and Burleigh Headland National Park.

The towers, put forward by Gold Coast developer Vitale Projects, received council approval earlier this year.

Company director Chris Vitale said it would “put Burleigh on the map” for tourists.

“Burleigh is my favourite location in Australia and everyone wants to come here but there’s nowhere to stay if you are looking for five-star accommodation because otherwise you have to go north of Broadbeach,” he said.

“This will put Burleigh on the map around Australia and internationally.”
