Punters enjoyed last drinks as the famed Fisherman’s Wharf name came to an end on the Gold Coast on Sunday.
The venue better known by locals as ‘Fisho’s’ was due to wrap up 25 years of business in its current form at Mariners Cove, remaining open last night until “stock ran out”. The popular watering hole is closing to make way for a proposed $480m redevelopment of the site to create a Ritz-Carlton hotel.
More than 30 other Mariners Cove tourism operators face the same fate. Locals Joan and Jock Winton said while the closure of Fisho’s was sad to see, the move made way for the city’s progression.
“We’ve been coming here on and off for about 20 years,” Mrs Winton said.
“That’s why we came down today – I reckon whatever will be here next will be good and good for progress.”
Meanwhile Elke White said the closure of Fisherman’s Wharf Tavern brought with it the “end of an era”.
“I was here back when they had the original Fisho’s with the bands and the live music, now it’s closing down again which is very sad,” she said.
“This isn’t the same as the old Fisho’s, but it’s still sad to see it go.”
The original Fisherman’s Wharf, a beloved live music venue that hosted major international and domestic acts, was on the now Palazzo Versace site.
