One of China’s largest car exporters has joined forces with the annual Gold Coast Marathon, aiming to supercharge its global appeal.
Chinese car brand Chery Motor has inked a deal as naming rights sponsor for this year’s marathon weekend on July 1-2 - it will now be the ‘2023 Gold Coast Marathon powered by Chery’.
Queensland Minister for Tourism and Sport Stirling Hinchliffe said securing Chery Motor - one of the world’s largest exporters of motor vehicles to over 80 countries - reinforced the marathon’s status as a major global event.
The 43rd marathon instalment has attracted 24,000 competitors from 48 different countries, generating 90,000 visitor nights and pumping an estimated $27 million into the city economy.
Events Management Queensland CEO Ben Mannion said it was a proud moment for the marathon to be selected as Chery’s first Australian event sponsorship.
“We welcome Chery Motor to the Gold Coast Marathon’s table of long-term national and international event sponsors and partners who recognise the opportunity an alignment with this outstanding and iconic Australian mass participation event delivers,” Mr Mannion said.
Chery Motor Australia’s managing director Andy Zhang said the Gold Coast Marathon provided a platform to align Chery vehicles with a premier road race, calling it a “world-class event”.
“We are delighted to be a part of this iconic event,” Mr Zhang said.
“It will offer the thousands of participants, friends and family with an opportunity to get up close and personal and witness first-hand innovation.”
Chery’s Omoda 5 SUV will lead running groups for the full and half marathon from the start line illuminated by a roof-top timing clock.
The Omoda 5 was introduced to Australia in March this year.
