Pimpama State Secondary College sports hall to double in size in major $12.2m revamp

A Gold Coast school with more than 1400 students is to see the size of its sports centre double in a major $12.2m investment. Here’s what’s planned.

Education Minister Grace Grace will today announce that a northern Gold Coast high school is to get $12.2 million to build one the area’s largest sports halls.

Pimpama State Secondary College has been allocated the cash to greatly expand its existing facility, in a project that is also expected to benefit the wider community.

Principal Megan Roderick told the Bulletin said the development would be a boon to sports programs at the 1430-student school, whose Open Rugby League team last week won the Titans School League.

“It’s a significant expansion of the existing sports hall. Essentially doubles it in size, which will allow for a second full basketball court or futsal court, and a few other amenities,” Ms Roderick said.

“We’re still working on full design, but we’re really excited about that.

“A doubled sports hall is going to give us opportunities to expand students’ access to high quality courts for our elite athlete development program, so our students will have significantly more access to really high quality facilities.

“But we’re also really excited that it will provide opportunity for us to accommodate our whole student body, which means that we’ll be able to have whole school events, assemblies, Anzac Day, etc.

“We haven’t been able to house all of our students anywhere previously.”

The news has also been welcomed with excitement by students at the school.

“The most exciting part about the hall extension is being able to host more sporting events and community activities,” Jackson Glasgow said.

Breezin Phillips said the new hall would “encourages more student to be active in the school community,” while Valentino Jacques said it “will improve our students’ wellbeing as well as our school culture.”

The new hall at Pimpama will follow the building of similar facilities at Palm Beach Currumbin, Miami State High and Nerang State High.

Minister Grace, on a visit to the Gold Coast today, will also announce $65 million will be spent on new classrooms at Broadbeach State School, Coomera State Special School, and Miami State School.

“Our ambitious infrastructure investment on the Gold Coast continues with more classrooms and halls because every student and all school staff deserve to learn and work in outstanding facilities,” Ms Grace said.

The spend was welcomed by Gaven MP and Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon.

““The Palaszczuk Government continues to deliver for students and families on the Gold Coast,” Ms Scanlon said.

“The record infrastructure investment will see new halls and classrooms across the region and is all part of our Big Build: the biggest decade of infrastructure delivery in Queensland’s history.”
