Trio charged after hire car ploughs through brick wall - May 13

Police allege a trio were found with drug pipes, dodgy credit cards and a stolen mobile phone after a fraudulently obtained hire car ploughed through a brick wall at Surfers Paradise.

Gold Coast police were called to Paradise Island after the single-vehicle crash about 7.30am on Thursday, a police spokeswoman said.

The car, a power box and the boundary wall were extensively damaged.

It’s understood a small Jack Russell terrier narrowly avoided being run down.

A witness who phoned police claimed the car was “flying down the street” at speed before the crash.

Police allege the 35-year-old man driving the car and a passenger, a 32-year-old man, fled the scene in a rideshare vehicle, but were tracked down by officers to a nearby business.

Queensland Ambulance Service treated a 40-year-old woman, who suffered a cut to her face.

She was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition for treatment.

Police allege “fraudulent cards” were found on the driver, while the woman was caught with a drug pipe and was in an “erratic” state.

It’s alleged the 32-year-old man also had a drug pipe, as well a stolen mobile phone.

Police have charged the driver with five counts of fraud, “relating to the hire of the rental car”.

The other man in the car was charged with possessing a utensil and possessing stolen property.

The woman was charged with possessing a utensil.

They are due to face court at a later date.

Dramatic moment rental car ploughs through brick wall

May 12: Police are investigating after a car was reportedly spotted “flying down the street” moments before it careened into a brick wall and occupants fled at Surfers Paradise.

Gold Coast police officers were called to Paradise Island after the single-vehicle crash about 7.30am on Thursday, a police spokeswoman said.

It’s understood the car, which has been extensively damaged, is a rental.

The caller who reported the crash to police claimed several people in the car fled, leaving behind a mess at the scene.

But Queensland Ambulance Service stated one stable patient, believed to be a woman, was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital. It’s thought her injuries are not life-threatening.

A small Jack Russell dog narrowly escaped the path of the out-of-control car, 9 News reports.

Police officers were patrolling the area after the dramatic crash.

It’s believed arrests have since been made.
