Gabriel Thomas Cahill charged with dangerous driving, exposing himself

In a strange mention, the man told a magistrate that his charges had been dropped at a “G20 summit” and he should be free to go.

Gabriel Thomas Cahill, 42, appeared in Tweed Heads Local Court on May 2.

Mr Cahill has previously pleaded guilty to charges of destroying/damaging property, driving with a middle range PCA and resisting an officer.

He has pleaded not guilty to further charges of not stopping/driving dangerously in a police pursuit driving furiously/ at speed in a police pursuit and wilful and obscene exposure.

Police allege Mr Cahill was seen driving a White Kia Cerato Sedan on the footpath near North Kirra Surf Club adjacent to Pacific Parade where he allegedly got out of the car naked and yelled at numerous bystanders and challenged a man to a fight on January 29, 2022.

It’s alleged he then drove off and about 8pm parked at Tweed Heads Hospital and was allegedly captured on CCTV punching a hospital glass fire escape door.

About 8.30pm police patrolling Minjungbal Drive Tweed Heads South found Mr Cahill and commenced pursuit where it is alleged he failed to stop driving.

Mr Cahill is alleged to have driven south to the M1 Motorway to the BP service centre at Chinderah where he stopped.

Police say they approached and attempted to remove him from the car.

The car door window was smashed with a baton strike by police after Mr Cahill allegedly refused to unlock the car and Police feared he would drive off.

It’s alleged he resisted arrest as he was pulled from the car by police and arrested.

At the time police allege he recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.125.

In court, defence lawyer Lucas Swan withdrew from the case.

Mr Cahill appeared by AVL self represented.

In a strange mention, he told the court he had been granted bail by the Supreme Court before saying all his charges had been dropped, which the court confirmed was inaccurate.

Mr Cahill then asked Magistrate Jeff Linden if he had “seen any stars in the sky recently” and if there were people missing in the community.

Mr Linden attempted to adjourn the case before Mr Cahill interrupted again stating a G20 summit had been held for his charges to be dropped.

Moving past the strange statement Mr Linden adjourned the matter for hearing on September 6 in Murwillumbah.

Mr Cahill remains in custody.
