Gold Coast paramedics have praised a “brave” off-duty nurse who rushed to help an e-scooter rider hit by a car and critically injured while he was not wearing a helmet.
The Currumbin man, 34, was riding the scooter eastbound along Reedy Creek Rd at Burleigh Heads when he collided with a Toyota Corolla travelling south on Bermuda St about 7.30pm on Tuesday.
He suffered critical internal and head injuries, according to Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Senior Operations Supervisor Adam Flory.
The quick-thinking nurse leapt into action and performed first aid at the scene until paramedics arrived to help.
The rider was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition, with the QAS High Acuity Response Unit and a critical care paramedic on board for transport.
The man was still in hospital in a critical condition midmorning on Wednesday.
A Robina woman, 23, driving the Toyota was not physically injured, Queensland Police stated.
Police said the scooter rider was “not wearing a helmet” during the serious crash.
Mr Flory urged scooter riders to protect themselves and “assume that they can’t be seen”, with horrific injuries involving the vehicles on the rise.
The paramedics urged riders to wear a helmet and follow road rules to prevent further tragedy.
“Incidents with e-scooters across Queensland have increased. Here on the Gold Coast, we’ve had a number of serious incidents regarding e-scooters,” he said.
“This is the second one I know of in a few weeks where the rider has sustained critical head injuries from simply not wearing a helmet.
“It’s like being a motorbike rider – assume that you can’t be seen and take some more precautions around what you’re doing.”
Police investigations into the harrowing collision were ongoing on Wednesday morning.
The crash comes as the Bulletin has been reporting on the concerns of Coast residents regarding e-scooters, which are an increasingly popular mode of transport.
