Man, 28, taken to Gold Coast University Hospital after falling 10m from balcony on Beach Rd at Surfers Paradise on Tuesday night

A man has survived a 10m fall from a balcony, seemingly while intoxicated. A senior paramedic says “it could have been a different story” had he landed in a different spot.

Shared history discovered between two paramedics

A MAN has escaped with relatively minor injuries after he plunged about 10 metres from a backpackers hostel balcony in Surfers Paradise.

Emergency services, including Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics, were called to Beach Rd after the man, 28, fell about 9.10pm on Tuesday, according to Operations Supervisor Paul Young.

Mr Young said the man fell from the fifth storey of the complex “and landed on the second floor roof”, on a metal overhand “which cushioned his fall”.

“If he fell on the concrete it could have been a different story,” he said.

“Due to the complexities of getting the patient out, the fire service (Queensland Fire and Emergency Services) was called, mainly for manpower as we had to get over a three metre wall to lift the patient over.

“He wasn’t seriously injured. Possible fracture to the lower limb, minor head injuries and he was transported in a stable condition up to Gold Coast University Hospital.”

Mr Young said it was believed the man had “some alcohol onboard” while “he was near a balcony”.

“At this stage it’s unknown how he fell from the balcony, what actually happened,” he said.

Mr Young said there was “lots of bystanders” around the complex, which he described as a backpackers hostel.

“So (there was) a lot of people there and I believe QAS received a lot of Triple-0 calls on it,” he said.

The man was stable when he was taken to hospital, alongside the High Acuity Response Unit.

Roads closed after five vehicle crash

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said a man was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition with abdominal and back injuries.

Sections of both the Pimpama roads remain closed with motorists asked to avoid the area by Queensland Police.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said the vehicles were starting to be cleared from the area just after 4pm.

Fireys tackle blaze at popular city tourist park

February 7: Firefighters have managed to extinguish a blaze thought to have ignited on the veranda of a unit in a Gold Coast tourist park before spreading inside the building.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) firefighters were called to Treasure Island Holiday Resort on Brisbane Rd at Biggera Waters about 12.10am on Monday.

The firefighters found “furniture on fire on a veranda”, a QFES spokesman said.

But the blaze which apparently ignited outside spread into the premises and caused some damage.

Four firefighting vehicles were at the “two-storey building” blaze, classed as high risk by QFES due to the danger of any potential spread.

No one was found in or around the unit, but Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics were called and “stood by supporting QFES”.

“No patients required QAS assessment or transport,” a statement read.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus attended, and power and gas was disconnected.

The blaze was extinguished by 1.10am, the scene was cordoned off.

The QFES Fire Investigation Unit was expected to probe the fire.

They assisted a worker aged in his 30s who suffered undisclosed injuries.

Neither Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) or QAS were not able reveal more information about the workplace, or the circumstances of the incident.

However, it’s believed the man was injured while working on a light pole in the street.

An investigation has been launched and inspectors were on site at the worksite about 11.20am after the man “sustained an electric shock”, a WHSQ spokesman said.

B-double loaded with RATs rolls on M1

February 3: A B-double truck driver transporting rapid antigen tests (RATs) has miraculously survived a horrific rollover crash on the M1, which police expected would delay traffic for hours.

A photo of the scene shows the crumpled wreckage of the truck in an embankment.

The truck was loaded up with pharmaceutical supplies, and the state government confirmed later on Thursday morning the vehicle had been carrying RATs, potentially destined for state schools.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk was asked at a press conference at Coomera about RATs on the truck and said she was sure they would be fine.

The truck driver, believed to be a man aged in his 50s, was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition suffering from facial, leg, abdomen and chest injuries, according to an ambulance statement.

He was able to get out of the truck after the crash and was treated on the scene by paramedics, critical care paramedics and a high acuity response unit.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesman said the man was “lucky to have escaped the vehicle and without more serious injuries.”

The spokesman said wet roads may have been a contributing factor in the crash, and urged residents to take care driving with the forecasted rainy week ahead.

Police warned early on Thursday morning that one lane remained open “although exit 66 may need to close at some stage”.

“Delays expected, avoid if you can,” police stated.

The “significant” delays were expected to continue for hours, a police spokesman added.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services was planning to help the trucking company transfer items to another truck, a spokeswoman said.
