Police release CCTV footage of Shane Bowden's final moments

POLICE have released vision showing the final moments leading up to the execution-style murder of bikie enforcer Shane Bowden.

The CCTV footage shows Bowden driving his luxury BMW into the driveway of his Pimpama unit after a late-night gym session on October 12 last year.

He is followed by two people on foot. One of them is carrying a long-arm firearm.

The pair have come running from a nearby vacant lot and follow Bowden into his garage.

The two offenders are shown on the footage running back to a waiting car that police have described as a silver Commodore driven by a third offender.

Earlier this week police released CCTV footage that showed two men loading jerry cans into a hire car at a Logan petrol station in the lead up to the murder.

The car is believed to be a dark blue Kia Cerato.

Police believe the fuel in the jerry cans was used to burn two vehicles linked to the murder – a Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore – which were found dumped in the northern Gold Coast.

The hire car was then returned. Police on Tuesday released CCTV of the men. They say the men are not the same suspects who placed a GPS tracking device on Bowden’s car weeks before his death – and are appealing for public assistance.

On Tuesday, Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith told media it was “clear the whole crime has been planned and executed” by the Mongols and the associates were working on their behalf.

He revealed a property at Ripley, near Ipswich, was raided on Saturday, at which officers seized “ballistic evidence” believed to be linked to the murder.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who may know the identity of the two suspects to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Police Link on 131 444.

POLICE say Mongols gang associates hired a car as a getaway vehicle for the killers of bikie enforcer Shane Bowden.

Two men were seen loading jerry cans into the hire car, a dark blue Kia Cerato, at a Logan petrol station in the lead up to Bowden’s murder.

Bowden was shot 21 times as he drove into his Pimpama unit after a late night gym session on October 12.

Police believe the fuel in the jerry cans was used to burn two vehicles linked to the murder – a Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore – which were found dumped in the northern Gold Coast.

A rental car, hired from Logan in October before Bowden’s murder, was then used as a getaway car, police believe.

The hire car was then returned. Police on Tuesday released CCTV of the men. They say the men are not the same suspects who placed a GPS tracking device on Bowden’s car weeks before his death – and are appealing for public assistance.

Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith said it was “clear the whole crime has been planned and executed” by the Mongols and the associates were working on their behalf.

He revealed a property at Ripley, near Ipswich, was raided on Saturday, at which officers seized “ballistic evidence” believed to be linked to the murder.

Supt Smith said the evidence was being forensically examined, but would not say what was found.

He said up to 12 people could be involved in the crime and urged those involved to come forward.

“If you are on the fringe, it’s about time you thought about yourself because these gangs have no honour among themselves,” he said. “They are not going to protect you. They don’t care about you.”

Detectives are appealing for anyone who may have knowledge of the Kia Cerato or the two men to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Police Link on 131 444.

The Queensland Government has issued a reward of $250,000 for information that leads to the conviction of the person, or persons, found to be responsible for Shane Bowden’s murder.

An indemnity from prosecution will be recommended for any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the crime, who first gives such information.

How Bowden killers spent weeks planning murder - JUNE 25

A GPS tracker was fitted to slain bikie Shane Bowden’s luxury car in the lead-up to his execution-style murder, with police revealing he was monitored for three weeks before he was shot 21 times.

The planting of the tracker and surveillance highlighted the “sophistication” and planning involved by likely killers from the Mongols bikie club, police said on Friday.

Bowden was shot 21 times in the garage of his Pimpama property on October 12, 2019 after returning from a late-night gym session.

One shooter used a machine pistol firing 19 bullets, the other used a shotgun.

Detectives released more CCTV footage on Friday showing two figures walking towards Bowden’s black BMW at the Pimpama unit complex. Police said one person appeared to place a GPS tracker on the vehicle, while the other stood guard.

Police revealed the suspects linked to the device drove past Bowden’s unit “multiple times” and parked in the same vacant lot used by the waiting shooters on the night of the murder.

Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith said a GPS tracker was recovered from the vehicle and investigations were ongoing.

“It clearly shows the premeditation of the people involved in this. To go to that much trouble you would suggest that it only happens in the movies, well this is happening right here in Queensland.”

He said detectives believed the Mongols gang were behind the murder.

“This is the extent of their sophistication, that they are using tracking devices. Personal surveillance on their victims. More reason that we need to have these people taken off the street,” Supt Smith said, adding it showed the killers had been planning the murder for “some time”.

Supt Smith said it was believed the surveillance started after Bowden was released from hotel quarantine following a border bungle at the height of Victoria’s Covid-19 outbreak. Bowden was part of the Finks Terror Team in the early 2000s before joining the Mongols. He was removed from the club and rejoined the Finks.

Police on Monday raided a property linked to the Mongols, seizing a truck captured on CCTV travelling in convoy with two vehicles linked to the murder. The cars were later found burnt out.

Detectives also seized electronic devices, a handgun unrelated to the murder, and burnt clothes.

Police have offered a $250,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible for the murder. An indemnity from prosecution is also offered for those who weren’t directly involved in the shooting death.

“We know there’s a number of people involved right through from the actual shooter, to the planners, to the leaders, to those involved in providing those getaway vehicles that were found burnt out. All of these people need to consider their positions and realise that murder carries life imprisonment.”

Detectives are appealing for anyone who may recognise these vehicles or know the identity of the two suspects to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Police Link on 131 444.

EARLIER: GUN LINK IN BOWDEN MURDER

POLICE believe the weapon used in the execution-style killing of bikie Shane Bowden is similar to a firearm found during a raid of an alleged Mongols associate.

Detectives have yet to find the weapon or charge anyone over the murder. They believe a machine pistol was used to gun down the notorious Finks bikie in a Pimpama garage after a late-night gym session on October 12.

Bowden, who was a member of the Finks Terror Team, recently rejoined the club from the Mongols, who are suspected of being behind the killing.

An image of the gun, likened to the murder weapon, was released by police last week during the announcement of a $250,000 reward for information.

The pictured weapon was similar to a gun seized during a raid at an Ipswich property on October 19.

Detectives raided the property and uncovered two chests which allegedly contained ammunition and a raft of military-grade weapons.

Police allege Jake Andrew Taylor is an accused Mongols associate and that he took the two chests of weapons to Dylan Bock’s home on the day of Bowden’s murder.

Taylor is charged with supply of firearms, 12 counts of possessing a modified firearm and one count of possessing explosives. Bock has also been charged with a string of weapons offences. Bock and Taylor have not been charged over Bowden’s death.

The picture of the pistol released by police matched a firearm seized during the October raid, which was pictured in an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court during Taylor’s failed bail bid late last year.

When contacted, Regional Crime Co-ordinator Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith would not comment on the firearm link, but said: “The people charged (with weapons offences) are persons of interest in relation to the broader (Shane Bowden) investigation.

“There’s clear links between those people being (alleged) associates of the Mongols Outlaw Motorcycle Gang. We encourage all who have knowledge of anything to come forward and take the opportunity to seek the reward and indemnity.”

A property near Ipswich was raided on Monday in connection to Bowden’s murder. A forensic search will be conducted again overnight and is expected to wrap up on Wednesday.

COPS DECLARE CRIME SCENE AT RURAL PROPERTY

POLICE have a new area of focus in the hunt for the killers of notorious bikie Shane Bowden.

A crime scene was established in a rural property just outside of Fernvale, about 20 minutes north of Ipswich.

Police believe the property is linked to the two cars used in the execution style murder at Pimpama late last year.

Police were searching the area on Monday.

Bowden, a long-time member of the Finks and one-time Mongols convert, was shot 21 times with a machine pistol as he drove into the garage of his Cox Rd, Pimpama unit just after midnight on October 12 last year.

Two hooded figures were seen stalking in a nearby vacant lot, police later revealed.

Police believe the Mongols are responsible for the murder.

On Sunday, police released CCTV footage of the two “getaway cars” they say are linked to the Mongols outlaw motorcycle gang and the “vicious, callous and premeditated murder” of Bowden.

Sources told the Bulletin on Monday that police had spoken to about 20 Mongols in the past week.

None have co-operated.

A man appeared in Southport Magistrates Court via videolink on Monday accused of stealing the identification used to buy the getaway cars.

Police allege Zachary Darren Bennett Kooymans and two other men took the ID during an Ipswich robbery four months before Bowden was killed.

Kooymans has not been charged over the bikie enforcer’s death.

He had his matter adjourned to Tuesday, June 29 after prosecution received “new information” on Monday morning.

CCTV FOOTAGE RELEASED

JUNE 20: HOMICIDE detectives have released new CCTV footage of two “getaway cars” linked to the Mongols outlaw motorcycle gang and the “vicious, callous and premeditated murder” of notorious Gold Coast bikie Shane Bowden.

Queensland Police South Eastern Regional Crime Coordinator Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith said the silver Holden Commodore and maroon Ford Falcon were bought by associates of the Mongols a week before the murder.

Bowden, a long-time member of the Finks and one-time Mongols convert, was shot 21 times with a machine pistol as he drove into the garage of his Cox Rd, Pimpama unit just after midnight on October 12 last year.

Det Supt Smith said the murder could be a revenge attack after Bowden rejoined the Finks after his stint with the opposing gang.

“Whether that’s because he left the club or has done something in the interim to cause bad blood,” he said.

The investigation into Bowden’s suburban slaying continues to ramp up.

On Thursday, police announced a $250,000 reward and indemnity from prosecution for anyone with crucial information. Images were also released of a machine pistol, thought to be a TEC-9, similar to the firearm used to gun down Bowden.

The getaway cars, located on fire a short time after the murder, are seen in the footage driving “in convoy” from the Ipswich area toward Brisbane a day after they were bought. The Ford driver appears to be wearing gloves.

Det Supt Smith was confident the reward and indemnity would attract members of the criminal underworld chasing a payday.

“There’s no honour among thieves,” he said.

“These offenders are associates of the Mongols outlaw motorcycle gang. We’re not saying that these people are gang members, but they’re clearly associates of that gang and operating under their direction and control.”

REVEALED: ‘RIDICULOUS’ WEAPON USED TO MURDER COAST BIKIE

June 17: Someone could be a “quarter of a million dollars richer” if they can lead police to the murderers who shot a Gold Coast bikie 21 times with a machine pistol.

Speaking in Surfers Paradise on Thursday, Queensland Police South Eastern Regional Crime Coordinator Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith said he was confident a new $250,000 reward would encourage elements of the criminal underworld to come forward with new information about the slaying of Finks bikie Shane Bowden, 48.

Bowden was sprayed with bullets as he drove into the garage of his Cox Rd, Pimpama unit just after midnight on October 12 last year.

“We are hoping the announcement of the Queensland Government’s reward of $250,000 for information that leads to the conviction of the person, or persons, found to be responsible for Shane’s murder will bring in new leads for detectives,” he said.

“In addition to the reward, an appropriate indemnity from prosecution will be recommended for any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the crime, who first gives such information.”

Police have also released images of a machine pistol, essentially a machine gun, similar to the firearm used to murder Bowden

“A weapon like that is ridiculous. There is no lawful excuse to have one of them unless you’re a member of the ADF (Australian Defence Force),” Det Supt Smith said.

He said Bowden had been shot 21 times and no one deserved to die so violently, no matter their criminal ties or background.

“We should always care about any violence. It doesn’t matter what walk of life you come from, no one deserves to die in this manner, and I think it’s important we all understand that and we step forward, get those people responsible bought before the courts,” Det Supt Smith said.

“Mr Bowden has been shot 21 times, so that’s a significant amount of damage to a person.”

He was confident police would track down those responsible for Bowden’s death and said police still had a number of persons of interest in their sights, particularly from the Mongols outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG).

Det Supt Smith said he believed the reward was large enough to tempt criminals with salient information about the brutal suburban murder to come forward.

Bowden was shot following a late-night session at the gym and police previously revealed two men dressed in hoodies had been lying in wait in a nearby vacant lot in the hours leading up to the slaying.

The underworld heavyweight – a long-time member of the Finks outlaw motorcycle gang and one-time Mongols gang convert – survived an attempt on his life in Victoria before he moved back to the Coast and was gunned down.

Bowden was a well-known participant in the Coast Ballroom Blitz punch-up at a public kickboxing event in 2006, one of the biggest and most widely publicised bikie brawls the city has seen.

Bowden murder

No one has been charged with Bowden’s murder.

Shortly before his death, in September 2020, Bowden was accused of flying into Queensland while knowingly infected by the coronavirus.

But on October 1, 2020 he was ultimately fined just $750 by a Coast magistrate for making a false statement on his border pass.

Coast Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith said after the slaying: “He’s basically driven into his driveway, hasn’t even got out of his car and he’s been executed.”
