RESIDENTS of a Gold Coast suburb are fed up with stray shopping trolleys littering their canals and footpaths.

Chevron Island Business and Residents Association (CIBRA) president Tony Steven said a short walk around his neighbourhood revealed three abandoned trolleys.

Mr Steven said he understood it was hard for those without a car to grocery shop but pleaded with residents to call the supermarket collection line.

“Leaving them on the footpath afterwards is not acceptable,” Mr Steven said.

“As a community, we need to decide if trolleys should be allowed to leave the designated carparks at all.

“The canals are full of them and reporting their position back to the collectors is not happening enough, so many are missed.”

He said CIBRA wants the Gold Coast City Council to work with supermarket chains, mainly Coles, to ensure “the eyesores” don’t continue to build up around the streets.

“The shops are doing their best to come and get them, but I think we would all prefer if we spoke to Coles to get them stopped from being taken out of the store.”

A Coles spokeswoman said the company provided trolleys to its customers for their convenience and spent a significant amount on maintaining them each year.

She said some of that cost included the collection of trolleys that had been removed from their premises.

“Abandoned trolleys are a nuisance to local communities and we are actively working to make this better across the nation,” she said.

“At this store in Surfers Paradise, we have a trolley collection service every day of the week for abandoned trolleys.”
