‘Mummified’ man’s body found at Benowa, Gold Coast home

A police source confirmed they were investigating after a mummified body was found and were treating it as an unexplained death.

Police are investigating after a “mummified” body of a man was found in his Gold Coast home.

The body, which was found last month, is believed to have been in the home for “potentially 18 months to two years”.

A police source confirmed the “mummified” body had been found in the Benowa home.

Police are investigating and the death is being “treated as unexplained” at this point.

The body of the 69-year-old man was found after police were called to do a welfare check.

It is understood the man lived with his step son and mother but the welfare checked was called for by relatives from interstate.

Police went to the Edinburgh Rd home about 2.50pm on April 17 for the welfare check.

It is understood mental health issues may be involved.

Several of the man’s neighbours said they knew someone had died after police attended the home last month, but were not aware of the circumstances surrounding the death.

Many expressed shock upon hearing the details and said they had not known or seen the man.

“We never met the guy. It is very disturbing,” one woman said.

“It is a terrifying thought that that can happen to someone and no one noticed.”

Another neighbour described it as a “very sad story”.

“Nobody knows him but apparently they had been living here for a while,” he said.

Many homes on Edinburgh Rd are large, two-storey residences with security gates.

The quiet area is home to several young families.
