‘Real mess’: Burleigh Heads surrounded by construction

The owner behind one of Burleigh’s most popular coffee shops is saying goodbye after six years of trading, stating the suburb has become the new Surfers Paradise.

Burleigh Heads’ Seadog owner Brodie Green announced he was selling the coffee shop, which he opened in 2018 out of an empty ATM space.

Mr Green opened his second coffee shop Buoy – in Nobby Beach’s The Oxley – in November last year.

He said while it was a bittersweet goodbye, he had decided to sell the business to focus on Buoy and a new venue that he would announce in two months.

Despite Burleigh Heads being plagued by light rail stage 3 construction, Mr Green said the project hadn’t hindered his business.

“Commercial leasing in Burleigh is quite high though so I can understand how some businesses are struggling when sales dip,” he said.

Mr Green said he believed Burleigh Heads had become the new Surfers Paradise.

“(It’s) great for foot traffic and tourism but it’s now saturated with hospitality venues,” he said.

“Burleigh has transformed from this small coastal beach town to one of the largest tourist destinations on the Gold Coast.”

The Bulletin revealed in April that staff on James St were afraid to walk to their cars, while customers were being frightened away.

Mr Green said he had noticed an increase in crime in the suburb, and that shop owners on James St had a group chat to ensure everyone was kept “in the loop with recent thefts”.

“There will need to be a discussion soon about having a larger police presence in Burleigh, otherwise it’s going to get much worse,” he said.

“I watched with my own eyes children stealing bongs from the tobacconist. I had to go over and tell the shopkeeper because they came back for a second time.”

Mr Green said he had multiple meetings Seadog’s new owner and highlighted the “importance of continuing with the same coffee, staff and vibe”.

“Locals love consistency and they love seeing a familiar face in the morning.”
