Qld mayors criticise Bureau of Meteorology of lack of weather warnings

Gold Coast residents have been warned to prepare for a severe thunderstorm this weekend, with the chance of flash flooding, destructive wind gusts and large hail.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued a warning on Friday for southeast Queensland, including in Brisbane, the Scenic Rim region and Lockyer Valley.

The Bureau’s senior meteorologist Daniel Hayes said a surface trough moving from New South Wales was heading toward the Gold Coast and was expected to arrive midnight on Saturday.

“There is some possibility that we could see very isolated falls pushing up to 100mm out of this activity, maybe a little bit more than that,” Mr Hayes said.

“Probably looking at the Scenic Rim, the border ranges around the Gold Coast will likely see the biggest falls and that severe thunderstorm activity.

“There is the potential for strong wind gusts of up to 100km/hr or so and large hail.”

Mr Hayes said the surface trough will move north “quickly” on Saturday before reaching the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

“At this point it looks like it will move relatively quickly through Saturday but then by Sunday we start to see things contract up to the Sunshine Coast through to the Wide Bay and potentially up to the Capricornia and Whitsundays.”
