Mount Tamborine Damage

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for southeast Queensland, with parts of the Gold Coast already getting smashed by intense rainfall.

Up to 58mm of rain fell in a single hour on Monday afternoon at Mount Tamborine, with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) warning of a further deluge this evening.

The Bureau issued a severe thunderstorm warning for people in parts of Logan, Scenic Rim and the Gold Coast just after 2.30pm on Monday.

BOM senior meteorologist Felim Hanniffy said a slow-moving cell dumped 8mm of rain in Mount Tamborine after 2pm.

“The storms were very slow moving and they sort of weakened after, the risk certainly continues for localised heavy falls overnight and into tomorrow morning,” he said.

“Most of the action was around the western parts of the Hinterland and Scenic Rim, where we had around 52mm of rain in one hour.”

Rainfall of up to 47mm in a 30-minute burst was recorded at the Nindooinbah Dam, near Beaudesert at 1.30pm.

Mr Hanniffy said the risk of heavy rain would remain as a slow-moving upper trough hovers over the shore, bringing unstable conditions.

“The upper feature does move offshore tomorrow morning, so the risk tomorrow is probably in the early morning that we could see some localised heavy falls.”
