Gold Coast development: failed casino developer ASF plans temporary carpark in Southport

FORMER Gold Coast casino developer ASF Consortium’s latest Gold Coast project can be revealed - and it could mean a big change along the light rail route.

The site was previously a carpark but has been fenced off for several years.

A SITE earmarked for a giant 66-storey gold supertower is set to become the Gold Coast’s newest carpark.

ASF Consortium, through the company Gold Coast Development (No. 8), has filed a development application to temporarily transform the Scarborough Street site into a carpark.

The AU will featured a 66-storey supertower.

The 4776 sq m site will have space for 129 cars and will be resurfaced and locked, with a boom gate installed.

Area councillor Dawn Crichlow was cautiously optimistic about the idea but said it was critical not to repeat past mistakes.

“This is only a temporary measure but it is important the site is secure and that the operator does not try and undercut council,” she said.

The site was previously used as a private carpark but it was closed and fenced off several years ago.

No lighting is planned for the site, which is primarily expected to cater for workers in Southport during the day.

ASF is still pursuing its plans for its gold supertower complex The AU but has decided to temporarily put the site to use while it continues to refine its plans for the tower.

NEVER A FROWN IN GOLDEN TOWN

Council planning officers are expected to recommend to councillors that the approval of the carpark be granted with a specific time limit in place on how long it can operate.

The AU was first revealed by the Bulletin in March 2016.

Approved by council in late 2016, it will be a two-tower development featured a 15-storey mid-rise and a 66-story supertower.

According to plans it would feature 694 apartments including 1087 bedrooms through a mixture of studio, 1,2,3 and 4 bedroom apartments in a mixture of Permanent residential and serviced apartments.
