DEVELOPERS behind a proposed multi-million dollar gold superpower say they are confident their Southport project is just weeks away from approval.

ASF Consortium’s The Au, a two-tower development featuring a 15-storey mid-rise and a 66-storey supertower, is being assessed by council officers nearly six months after it was submitted.

However, issues remain over concerns the giant mixed-use project’s shadow will leave the neighbouring Southport Bowls Club in the dark as well as how to connect it with the city’s wastewater network.

ASF, which is also just weeks away from submitting its plans for an integrated resort and casino on The Spit to the State Government, recently provided council with revised designs for the tower.

ASF senior development manager Dean LaVinge said he the project was progressing well.

“There are still some ongoing discussions about final development conditions but we are hoping (an approval) is not too far away,” he said.

“We are optimistic that we will get it through in the next few weeks and are excited to get underway.

“Internal planning is underway and we are keen to start marketing it.”

The smaller tower is expected to feature smaller apartments, with larger units proposed for the superpower.

It would also feature a retail and dining precinct.

In its most recent correspondence with council, ASF’S town planners, UPS, responded to questions from city hall over the size of shadow over bowls club and Southport Tennis Club.

It argued that while the shadow would stretch as far as Southport Croquet Club on the spring equinox, its thin profile made it less obtrusive than a previously approved tower on the same site.

According to plans it would feature 694 apartments, including 1087 bedrooms through a mixture of studio, one, two, three and four-bedroom units.

Falling within the Southport Priority Development Area (PDA), The AU’s chances of council approval are high.

But area councillor Dawn Crichlow said she had concerns about the project’s effect on the bowls club.

“The negotiations with the club are ongoing in terms of putting the sewerage pipes under the share easement,” she said.

“Quite frankly, the shadow is an important element, especially if it does affect the bowls club.

“I think there is a long way to go before the approval is given.”

The Park Lane project, which takes its name from abbreviation for Australia and the atomic symbol for gold on the periodic table of elements, is designed to be enveloped in gold glazing.

According to documents filed with the council, ASF say the glazing would “take on different tones depending on the viewer’s and sun’s position and would vary from gold to light blue and light green”.
