Residents in a quiet Coast suburb fear that it is only a matter of time before a child is killed by hoons racing through their streets as they petition for speed bumps and CCTV cameras.

CONCERNED locals fear it its only a matter of time before a child or someone else is killed by hoons racing through residential Coomera streets at high speed.
With recent property damage and frequent near misses, residents have started a petition to get speed humps or CCTV cameras installed along George Alexander Drive and surrounding streets.

An affected local, Vicki, 37, who feared hoon harassment if she gave her full name, said since the Bloom estate along Azure Way had opened up, “idiots’’ had turned the thoroughfare into a racetrack to hoon and do burnouts in what was previously a quiet family area.
Hoons have been using George Alexander Drive, Bloom Drive and Celestial Drive as race tracks with no regard for children “playing on their bikes and enjoying games outside with their friends’’.

“We have already had people speed and overtake on a one-lane street, and now we have to contend with these people who think it’s great fun,” she said.

“We had a car almost land in our neighbour’s yard on Sunday afternoon because he lost control.
“They went up the pathway and through the fence.
“What if people were walking there when this happened? It’s so dangerous and it’s happening all the time.

“They are going to kill someone.”
Vicki said police were called and on the scene within minutes during one incident.
“Lucky for us, when these people hit the fence they left their licence plate,” she said.
“I want this to be a safe environment. I want to have an area where our kids can go outside and play and feel safe.”
Residents are pushing for safety measures to be set up before it is too late, petitioning their local councillor.

“I want to get everyone involved as we are a community and we need to work together to stop this dangerous behaviour.” she said.
“(We want to) stop the hooners and have a safe environment for our kids and for us.”
“Everyone I have spoken to has a story to tell about dangerous driving.
“If you are hooning in our area, please stop, you are going to kill someone and we are watching you and writing down your licence plates and giving them to the police.”
Locals could report illegal street racing, burnout offences, playing loud music from car stereos, speed boat hooning or drink driving by contacting their local police station or calling Policelink on 13HOON (134666).
