THE building company behind a dangerous accident at a Gold Coast construction site has been issued a “please explain” from the state’s building watchdog.
An elderly woman narrowly avoided being crushed by a 500kg hook that fell from a crane at Mermaid Beach last week. Locals in the area heard a large crash on Bondi Avenue just before 11am Thursday.
The woman, who lives in the area, had been “two metres” from where the crane part landed as she walked home from a local cafe, a business owner said.

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission issued a notice of proposed licence conditions on MPG Constructions Queensland on Friday.
The company has seven days to demonstrate to the QBCC why strict licence conditions shouldn’t be imposed.
If the company can’t convince the QBCC it can operate safely, it will be hit with similar conditions as imposed on industry juggernaut Multiplex in the wake of three men being injured at the $1.4 billion Jewel development site.
The men had been working in a confined space in the lower car park area of the Surfers Paradise development when a three-and-half-tonne metal cable conduit fell around three metres from above.
It ordered the company to review its workplace health and safety management plan in the presence of an independent auditor and report to the regulator every three months until Jewel is completed.
