ONE of the Gold Coast’s most famous pubs will be redeveloped to become the city’s newest backpacker hostel.
Developer Dencal has filed plans to transform Surfers Paradise’s Clock Hotel into a short-term accommodation facility targeting young travellers.
LAST-GASP BATTLE TO STOP CONTROVERSIAL COAST TOWER
Under the plans, the hotel’s existing tavern will be kept while levels two through five will be gutted and replaced with 22 bedrooms and a total of 138 beds.
A communal kitchen, recreation room and internet zone will also be created.
FULL DIGITAL ACCESS: JUST $1 A WEEK FOR FIRST 12 WEEKS
The developer filed a similar application in 2012 but never progressed with the project, allowing its approval to lapse in 2016.
The Clock Hotel, designed by Desmond Brooks, was built in 1996 by Developer Sunland Group for owner Jenny Wong.
The Clock Hotel redevelopment is the second new backpackers proposed for Surfers Paradise in the past month.
