AS the majority of the state freezes through an ‘icy blast’, the Far North is expected to be blessed with some above average temperatures this week.

While the forecast is predicting mostly cloudy weather around Cairns, the temperature is going to mean warmer weather for the Far North than our southern counterparts.

Cairns is expected to reach a top of 27C on Wednesday with the mid-20s sticking around for the rest of the week including a top of 26C on Saturday and Sunday. The average July temperature for Cairns is a minimum of 17.2C with a maximum of 25.8C.

Nights are also expected to get a little warmer with a minimum of 18C as the region recovers from its ‘cold snap’ which had meant temperatures dropping to a mere 11C in mid-July.

The Bureau of Meteorology is expecting minimal rainfall in the region over the next seven days with showers possible on Sunday and Monday with up to 0.4mm falling.

Wind gusts can be expected between 15-25km/h throughout the week

A strong wind warning may be put in place on Thursday and Friday for the Cairns coast depending on conditions.

The UV index is due to reach an 8 (very high) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with sun protection recommended if heading outdoors.
