A Surfers Paradise cafe is looking brand new thanks to a lot of elbow grease from its dedicated staff.
During COVID-19 enforced closures, staff members at Surfers Paradise’s Hard Rock Cafe have been renovating the tired restaurant.

Venue Manager Maurice Van Tilburg said their closure on March 23 was “financially devastating” but also a great opportunity to give the site new life.

“We have always wanted to fix the place up but never had the time,” he said.
Chefs, waiters and management staff, all on JobKeeper, sanded the iconic venue timber to its bare bones and revarnished, painted and repaired “all sorts of things”.

“We were bored and didn’t have anything to do when we were closed, so we got stuck into it,” he said.
“We are proud of our work and can’t wait for people to see it.”

The world-renowned venue, known for its big Gibson guitar and pumping soundtrack, reopened its doors at 5pm today.
Mr Van Tilburg said the restaurant had a limited menu and social distancing measures, like electronic menus and limited seating.
“But don’t fear, Hard Rock will have the same vibe, just like when it opened in 1996,” he said.
