It might only be September, but can you really put a date on joy? For Matt Hey, the answer from critics was a firm ho ho no!
The Sydney comedian posted a TikTok getting into the holiday mood.
“I'm not even kidding, I know it's September, but I am putting the Christmas tree up... and none of you can stop me,” he said in his video.
"Honestly, I'm sick of this year, I'm done with it. Let's just put the Christmas tree up and call it a year."

It’s tinsel, not a crime
It sparked debate with a headline even calling his decision a ‘seriously divisive’ act.
But honestly…is it that deep?
We’ve all just trudged through a few tough years. If a man wants to unwrap the fairy lights early, who are we to scrooge his sparkle?
I was raised to believe putting up even a single bauble before December 1 meant bad luck (thanks to my mum’s superstitions).
As an adult, I’ve stuck with it, but only because our family tradition is to buy live Christmas trees.
The tree would wilt before Santa arrives.
That said, never once have I begrudged anyone else getting into the Christmas spirit early.
If seeing Christmas decor on the shelves at Big W beside the Halloween pumpkins makes you angry… honestly, take a tic tac.
If decorating early makes someone’s home feel warmer, brighter and happier, isn’t that the whole point of Christmas spirit?
Christmas is about more than just the 25th of December.
It’s nostalgia, twinkling lights, Mariah’s high note on repeat, and that fizzy little feeling of wonder you can’t quite bottle.

Maybe sooner really is better
For some, stretching that joy across a few extra months isn’t an offence.
Matt shared a video of himself dancing around his tree, living his best anti-Grinch life!
The comment section is fully on board with his energy.
“The best use of free will I’ve ever seen,” one person wrote.
“Ok, bestie, this is the green light I needed for my own Christmas delulu,” a second praised.
A third added: “Normalise putting your Christmas tree up early.”

Every year, we see people whine about hot cross buns showing up in January or Christmas trees in September. But honestly, who decides it’s “too soon”?
Sure, it’s marketing, but clearly it’s working. And if it makes people happy, isn’t that the whole point?
Life’s too short to police someone else’s fairy lights.
