Bridesmaid quits after being issued 14-page wedding contract, ‘Thanks, but no thanks’

Bridezilla issues her demands: "Hair must be blonde or black, I will tell you what colour is best for you," and it gets worse.

Real life '27 dresses' for this bridesmaid

Being asked to be a bridesmaid by a friend or relative is one of those moments in life that is both so exciting and painful.

You’re so honoured to stand beside the bride on such a special occasion, but at the same time, there’s so much that comes with the job.

For many, it's been a dream between besties for as long as they can remember.

From planning bridal showers and hen’s parties to dress shopping, nail and hair appointments and waking up at the crack of dawn the morning of- it’s definitely not a job for someone on the fringe.

But for a special friend or relative, you pop on the never-going-to-wear-this-again dress, pack on the make up and smile because you love them.

However, one woman has labelled one bride-to-be an “Absolute monster” after she issued a 14-page contract to her bridal party.

Here’s your binder

The bridesmaid took to Reddit to share that while she was initially looking forward to celebrating her colleague Laura’s wedding to her fiancé James in April, it quickly turned sour.

“We began planning everything, having multiple meetings to make sure we all are up to date on all plans,” the bridesmaid wrote.

“She is a bit of a neat person and very organised. She made all five bridesmaids and her maid of honour a binder of our duties... We keep track of appointment vendors — pretty standard stuff.

“But that’s not all that’s in there.”

The long (long, long, long) list of rules

The bride drafted up a set of rules for her big day, and each one seemed more ridiculous than the last.

“No visible tattoos. Must be removed or covered with makeup. No jackets or long sleeves to cover them,” the bride wrote.

“Full head of hair. No shaved sides or back. Must have a wig professional put on if hair cut is not acceptable.

“Hair can not be too short. It must be able to be braided. Also if your hair is too long like to your waist, it will need to be cut. Hair must be blonde or black. I will tell you what colour is best for you.

“You must fit into a size eight dress. I don’t want to see tents (too big) or rolls (too tight). Dresses have been ordered at a size eight only.

“No brown eyes. That’s James’ and my eye colour, so you will need to get contacts. Blue is required.”

Other banned items on the list included “harsh tans”, visible scars and glasses.

“Get contacts or go without for the day,” the bride instructed.

Run!

The bridesmaid-to-be felt the bride’s rules were directed solely at her, “Here is where I started to backpedal and want to walk away.”

“I have very thick but fine hair. I keep the sides shaved down and the top and back long like halfway down my back, which helps my migraines.

“I also have an Eeyore tattoo and a bear paw print tattoo that show. I also just had bariatric (gastric sleeve) surgery, so I’m working on losing weight. I also have glasses.”

But wait, there’s more!

The binder also appeared to include 14 double-sided pages of the requirements of the bridal party on top of the already strict set of rules.

The contract included clauses such as “not getting pregnant, attending meetings and events, as well as constantly communicating,” the bridesmaid revealed.

The bridesmaids are also expected to gift the bride and groom a minimum of $150 each and “some type of expensive alcohol”, along with a $400 fee to be a bridesmaid.

“They aren’t having a destination wedding. It’s here in our city at a park with dinner at the hotel. She wants us at the hotel so we can be close if she needs us.

“I tried to explain I can’t afford this, and she told me I had to figure it out. I figured she lost a bridesmaid, me.”

Thanks, but no thanks

The original poster did what I think was the only logical step and quit her bridesmaid duties.

“I am not doing the wedding. The bride is mad, but I don’t care,” she said.

The thread has over 500 comments, with the internet weighing in on the controversy.

“People say this is crazy and fake, but one of my old ‘best’ friends said she didn’t invite me to be a bridesmaid at her wedding because I didn’t fit her wedding vision aesthetically,” one said.

Another commenter revealed: “I’ve actually seen quite a few bridezillas want their bridesmaids to wear coloured contacts... So they all look alike, like Barbie. They all had to have shoulder-length blonde hair.”

Another questioned, “No brown eyes? That's a level of delusion I didn't think possible.”

The cost of being a bridesmaid

It’s estimated being a bridesmaid can set you back up over $1,500, so before you accept your friend or family’s invitation to be a bridesmaid, it’s prudent to consider the financial and personal costs at stake.

You’ll probably want to reserve your hard-earned dollars for someone you actually like and won’t make you change absolutely everything about yourself to fit their wedding vibe.
