Mum scores $40 Bluey toy for $8 bucks but is accused of 'stealing'

The Big W shopper says she used a 'little-known' retail rule to nab the bargain but people think she 'exploited' the system.

Bluey fans convinced Chilli has a ‘dodgy’ past

In the midst of the cost-of-living crisis (or should we just say 'our reality' now?), Aussies are always on the hunt for a good deal.

Sharing these finds with others online is common practice— to spark inspiration and to exchange tips — but one mum’s bargain post had the opposite effect and sparked controversy instead.

The Aussie shopper recently posted about how she scored a $39 'Bluey Tradies Ute' toy for just $8. However, instead of praise, she was met with accusations of 'stealing' and  'scamming the system.'

"I got this $39 Bluey Ute for only $8"

"Someone must have put these Bluey Ute’s on the shelf in the wrong spot. $8 seemed wrong in my head, so I scanned on the app," she posted to the Markdown Australia Facebook group.

"Took pictures, took it to the desk and showed the lady working. They radioed for someone to check, and sure enough, I got this $39 Bluey Ute for only $8!!!!"

She then attached photos of the Bluey Ute and the receipt, which clearly showed she paid $8.

Another photo showed three Ute toys on the shelf with the incorrect $8 price tag, which was meant for a different item.

Despite the poster's obvious excitement, the reaction from the group was far from supportive.

Many members criticised the mum for exploiting a pricing mistake.

At first there was backlash...

"Taking five seconds to read the $8 price point would have given you your answer that it is indeed not $8, but someone’s left it in the wrong spot," one woman commented. "Not a markdown at all and you’re lucky they honoured it as they’ve clearly been pushed over to the wrong spot probably by a customer. I wouldn’t call that a win I’d call that embarrassing."

Another person added, "So all I have to do is put multiple things in the wrong spot on a shelf, take photos and get it for a cheaper price???? Is that why it’s called getting it at a steal?"

This sarcastic response read, "So you moved three products over, and the teenage girl couldn't be bothered arguing with you. Wow, what a great win."

Then some defended the mum

However, not everyone was as critical.

"It's not stealing if the manager chooses to honour the discounted price, they can refuse and move the merchandise but instead they let her have it at that price. OMG, some of these comments are ridiculous," one pointed out.

One group member asked, "Why is everyone so upset over this mumma getting a good discount from a multi-billionaire company?"

"For everyone saying she's stealing, get a grip," another wrote. "How is it stealing if more than one of the items is under the wrong tag? It has to be honoured. I say great score, well done."
