Jamie Oliver restaurant collapse: Italian Limited goes into administration

JAMIE ‘The Naked Chef’ Oliver’s plan to open his first Australian pizzeria on the Gold Coast has been laid bare with work on the boil at Pacific Fair.

The UK kitchen sensation’s venue, Jamie Oliver’s Pizzeria, will be launched “in the coming weeks” with capacity for 45 customers and employing 25 staff, the Bulletin can reveal.

It will be next to Bin 232 restaurant at the renowned Broadbeach shopping mall with an open-plan kitchen for patrons to view the theatre of pizza making.

The pizzeria, measuring 148 sqm, will have a menu of “simple, honest and tasty food” inspired by the celebrated chef and media personality’s many trips to Italy.

“From tossing artisan pizza dough by hand to removing freshly baked, steaming pizzas from feature ovens, our pizzerias have earned an unrivalled reputation for serving incredible, authentic hand-stretched pizzas topped with the most fantastic and delicious ingredients, not to mention tasty salads and delicious desserts,” Mr Oliver said.

It will open daily from 10am to 10pm. He has teamed up with growing Gold Coast hospitality operator Hallmark Group which own and operate Oliver’s Australian restaurants.

Hallmark Group’s Gold Coast footprint so far includes Finn McCools Irish bar, Retros nostalgia nightclub and Shooters bar — all in Surfers Paradise.

Hallmark Group general restaurants manager Petra Orrenius said: “We are excited to announce that the first Jamie Oliver’s Pizzeria on the Gold Coast is the start of an exciting journey across Australia with many more locations on the horizon.

“We will be showcasing classic Italian flavours, encouraging our chefs to be creative and serving up meals that are made with care and delivered without fuss.

“Jamie continues to revolutionise the food industry with new recipes and concepts, and diners at Jamie Oliver’s Pizzeria will get to not only experience tasty and affordable food but with exceptional service in a warm and inviting atmosphere,” Ms Orrenius said.

Asked if Mr Oliver would at some stage pay a visit to his new Broadbeach venue, a spokesperson said: “A visit to the site is on the horizon for next year.”

The new Gold Coast venue plan comes after a 25-strong chain of Oliver eateries collapsed in the UK earlier this year, forced into administration.

It followed Mr Oliver’s purchase of his underperforming Australian restaurants off a failed company in March 2017. Despite visiting to relaunch his Australian venues, The Jamie Oliver Restaurant Group (Australia) collapsed in April last year.

But Hallmark Group stepped at the 11th hour to purchase his Australian outlets.
