Gold Coast couple reveal the reason they spent a small fortune on mock wedding photos in Paris

WEDDINGS are becoming more extravagant by the day, and a new trend is seeing couples spend big before the celebrations begin. A Coast couple reveals the reason why they spent a small fortune on wedding photos — that weren’t taken at their wedding.

A GOLD Coast couple have revealed the reason why they spent a small fortune on wedding photos — that weren’t taken at their wedding

Weeks before their wedding on the Gold Coast, Currumbin couple Scott and Wendy Powick flew photographer Adam Head and his wife out to the city of love to create extravagant wedding photos in a suit and custom made dress.

Costing upwards of $7500, Mr Powick, a photographer himself, said there was a good reason for setting up the larger than life photos in the romantic location — mostly so they could spend more time with their guests on their wedding day.

“Every wedding I’ve ever been to, the bride and groom lose two to three hours when they get their photos done,” Mr Powick says.

“I don’t want to do that. I want to spend as much time as I can with out guests.

“So I said let’s get all our big photos and dramatic ones done, come wedding day, we can spend time with out family.”

While Mr and Mrs Powick were already intending to visit Europe for work, they’re part of a growing global trend of couples spending tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars on ostentatious pre-wedding photos.

Pre-wedding photos are a billion-dollar industry in China, where women and men pose in wedding costumes in fantasy situations in urban landscapes, underwater and in custom made studios.

Gold Coast photographer Amanda Tzannes of Orchard Grove Studios said the craze is becoming more popular as couples compete for the most magnificent snaps for social media glory.

“You do see it more and more on Instagram — they want that notoriety possibly, they want some epic images to show people,” Ms Tzannes said.

“They can post it on Instagram, and then have something hanging on their wall that might be a great landscape photo, but they’re in it.

“It’s like the old fashioned Vogue shoots, they would take them to the desert. That’s what people are doing, they’re creating their own styled shoot.”

Mr Powick admits showboating was part of the reason for creating the wedding photos, however his passion for photography also played a role.

“Both my sisters got married young, I was always the back sheep,” he said.

“I just wanted to have these dramatic wedding photos. It had the exact effect I wanted. The way Adam shoots is incredible.”

Luckily for Wendy, she didn’t have to spend much money on the wedding dress for the shoot. When Wendy posted on a Facebook page seeking a second hand wedding dress for the photos, a Brisbane-based designer called Jordanna Regan offered to hand make her a custom designed wedding dress.

“The hardest part was giving the dress back,” Mrs Powick said. “It was beautiful. All she (Regan) wanted was a few of the photos.”
