First look at new southern Gold Coast doughnut cafe where booze and bacon are just the beginning

A new cafe is due to open on the Gold Coast this week selling doughnuts – but not as you’ve experienced them before.

DOUGHNUTS are a glorious food group on their own but a new eatery in Mermaid Beach is about to take the sweet treat to the next level.

The Doughnut Affair is putting a sophisticated spin on the carby confectionery, devising a doughnut menu “for grown ups” spiked with alcohol and stacked with savoury ingredients.

Pastry chef Graciela Jonen and founder Kurt Lehndorf are the team behind the doughnut and coffee bar, which is set to open this Saturday.

“We’re really trying to push the boundaries of what a doughnut can be,” Mr Lehndorf said.

“Our doughnuts are crafted with an art-like finesse; we want the experience to start as soon as customers lay eyes on them.

“They sure are a visual treat, but we’ve worked hard on these doughnuts for months and have perfected each element from the ground up to ensure they taste just as good as they look, if not better.”

The options start with Aperol spritz doughnuts, Malibu-laced pina colada doughnuts, champagne-infused doughnuts, bacon-topped doughnuts, dark-chocolate and espresso, and other boundary-pushing creations to be revealed upon opening.

The eatery will also offer Melbourne roaster’s Code Black Coffee.

The Doughnut Affair will open to the public on Saturday at Mermaid Village, 2375 Gold Coast Hwy, Mermaid Beach, next to FuFu restaurant.
