Brazilian La Fiesta Festival heats up the Gold Coast

PATRICIA Edgar says she lives her ultimate dream every day by bringing the sassy samba from her native Brazil to the Gold Coast.
The Molendinar dancer has lived on the Coast for 15 years.
“I started a dance group in 2009 and got a group of girls together so we could show off our culture,” she said.

“I’ve danced in Brazil, around Australia, and Papua New Guinea, to name a few.”
Ms Edgar and her group of dancers — called Bahia Alegria — do all of their performances in lavish costumes made out of beads and feathers.
“My costumes come straight from Brazil. They take about two weeks to make and about a week to be posted to Australia,” she said.

Ms Edgar is one of six dancers who will perform at the La Fiesta Festival at the Broadwater Parklands in February.
The event will include live music, performers and South American street food.
“People love our dance because we don’t just dance for the people, we dance with them,” Ms Edgar said.
The La Fiesta Festival is on Saturday February 23rd at 2-8pm. Entry is free.
