Firefighters battle blaze at Maudsland

Firefighters who battled a vegetation blaze in a Gold Coast suburb today were forced to return after it flared up a second time.

FIREFIGHTERS were twice called to Maudsland to battle a vegetation fire this morning.

Emergency services received the first call about the Selling Drive fire at 7.20am and had it extinguished by 10.15am.

But they were forced to return only half an hour later when it flared up again in hot and windy conditions.

Four crews remained scene for more than an hour containing the fire and left about 12.20pm.

The fire comes just a day after firefighters spent a day battling an inferno at Main Beach that caused a huge plume of smoke visible from much of the Gold Coast.

The blaze first broke out at 7am yesterday before reigniting at midday in dry scrub at Philip Park near the Sheraton Grand Mirage.

The flames were only metres from the road as fire crews worked to fight them back.

The fire blanketed parts of the city with a smoke haze reaching as far as Helensvale.

It is believed the hot, dry weather was responsible for the flare-up yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters said there was also a fire in the same area on Sunday night but were unsure if the two were related.

The Bulletin was told the fire investigation unit is investigating this afternoon.
