NEW graffiti that has been sprayed on the freshly painted stairs between the North Burleigh Lookout and Miami will be removed within the next 24 hours.
The word “eternity” was spotted spray painted in bright green three times on middle of the stairs yesterday.
Gold Coast City Council told the Bulletin it would be removed.
“The City had not received any reports of fresh graffiti on the Miami steps. The City will aim to remove the graffiti within 24 hours,” a Gold Coast City Council spokesman said.
Council’s move angered many locals, but Acting Mayor Donna Gates last Thursday told the Bulletin the artwork had to go in order to deter other would-be artists from decorating the Coast without permission.
“It sets a poor precedent for the city that someone comes along with a paintbrush and puts a painting on a piece of public infrastructure,” she said.
“We need to keep the rules in place. As a city we can’t allow the random painting of pieces of public infrastructure.”
A council spokeswoman said the paint was removed after a complaint was received from a member of the public.
Area councillor Pauline Young wasn’t impressed when council removed the rainbow stairs before bringing it to her attention.
She plans on raising the issue at a full council meeting tomorrow.
“I was disappoint the rainbow stairs was painted over,” Cr Young said.
“I’d like it to be reinstated.
“I’ve had a lot of residents and people from the community approach me to say they can repaint it. So it’s not an issue that we can’t do it. There’s a process we need to go through.”
