Winner named for Gold Coast’s best gym in 2023 competition

An Ormeau business owner has been left “blown away” and “in disbelief” after taking out the title of Gold Coast’s best gym for the fifth year.

After more than 700 votes were cast, Genfit Training Centre smashed the field of 70 finalists to take out the top gong.

It received a total of 183 votes, followed by second placed Fitness Compound with 161 votes.

Genfit owner Michael Kassouh credited the “family” environment of his gym for helping secure the win.

“We’re a family, really – that’s what I put it down to,” he said.

“If you need to cry when you come in here, you can do that.

“You don’t have to come in and train. If you just want to come in and sit down with one of my staff or myself and just talk, people can do that.”

Mr Kassouh, who is currently studying a double degree in psychology and exercise science, plans to expand his gym into a wellness centre with a focus on mental health.

“I truly believe the industry is moving away from the ripped bodies and beautiful people scene and it is becoming more about mental health and community,” he said.

“A whole health facility and wellness centre is where I see my business and my community going.”

The gym owner thanked his community, family and runner-up Fitness Compound for their support.

“Fitness Compound are one of those special groups of people that really care about their members and their community,” he said.

“I’m not surprised at all that we have been neck-and-neck (in the competition) the last couple of years.”
