Northern Gold Coast suburbs have claimed the unenviable title of the city’s illegal dumping hot spots amid a rise in cases of the “serious” problem.
It comes as an Upper Coomera man shared the moment an illegal dumper returned to the scene of his crime after being shamed on social media.
The man took to social media late last week after he discovered piles of industrial rubbish on his property.
He tracked some of the rubbish to a local building company, which advised him an individual hired by the business to dispose of the waste had illegally dumped it.
Hours after the public complaint, he shared an update with CCTV of the culprit taking the items away in a trailer.
“He must have seen the Facebook posts because at 11pm last night he went out to pick the rubbish back up,” the Upper Coomera man said.
“I don’t feel sorry for these guys – they’re only doing it because they got caught.
“How many other times have they done this and got away with it?”
A Gold Coast City Council spokeswoman said the city’s illegal dumping team issued 103 fines in the past financial year.
The top five suburbs for fines issued were Coomera (22), Pimpama (19), Oxenford (nine), Tugun (eight) and Upper Coomera (seven).
“The number of fines issued has increased in the past three years with the introduction of a dedicated illegal dumping team,” the spokeswoman said.
“It costs ratepayers more than $7 million each year to clean up litter and illegal dumping across the Gold Coast.
“Always make sure you dispose of your waste responsibly.”
Littering and illegal dumping can be reported through the city app or via the council’s website.
