“I came in last year and decided I wanted to do my own thing so I went through and painted and got all new equipment.

HIIT Burleigh directors Cody Philp and Amanda Hamlyn run the centre which is dedicated to transforming their clients using high intensity interval training.

“High intensity interval training is a new way of fat burning and the idea is to raise the heart rate as high as you can then lowering it,” Amanda said.

“We run eight-week transformation challenges and high intensity group classes.

“We do one-on-ones but more of what we do is group focused.”

Cody said the team also focused on providing nutritional advice to their members while helping them stay fit and motivated.

“After the challenges finish we don’t just tell people good luck and be on your way,” he said.

“And we’re not so much just to showing people how to lose fat, we’ve got people who have gone from already pretty lean to shredded and teaching them on proper nutrition — pre and post shred.

“We’re not a fight gym but we also do Muay Thai which is a lot of fun, hitting pads and getting fit, but we also focus on proper technique.”

“We have an altitude training centre, steam room, sauna and classes,” he said.

“Our membership base is a real mix of people.

“We have the standard everyday person who wants to get fit and we have a lot of ‘Instagram people’.

“I don’t have Instagram myself but a lot of people know who they are.”

Mr Freeman said one of the gym’s biggest drawcards was the location.

Club Manager James Lindner said the gym — which has been in the same spot for 12 years — has garnered a loyal membership base.

“Mermaid has an older demographic so we have aqua classes for the elderly members, hot yoga and pilates are also really popular, so are the standard body pump classes,” he said.

“We also do freestyle group classes which are 30 minute high intensity workouts which you don’t have to book in for.

“We’re not overcrowded but we do get a great cross range of people — there’s a 25 metre pool and a steam room which appeals to different people.

“There’s a real longevity with our members, probably because we’re a full service gym and we genuinely want our members to achieve their goals.”

Jack Smith and his team of personal trainers run 250 PT sessions a week.

It’s the personalised business model, tailored to each individual, which has made Vision so successful.

“We spend a lot of time focusing on individual client results, the majority of our guys are just trying to lose weight so we provide a comfortable environment that’s enjoyable,” owner Mr Smith said.

“They’re mostly corporate professionals who have struggled to stay fit after having kids and don’t prioritise their own health anymore.

“We have five trainers with 130 clients doing 250 PT sessions a week ... I’ve actually just hired a new trainer so we’ll be able to take on more people.”

Mr Smith said the benefit of a personal trainer was face-to-face interaction rather than just “swiping a card.”

“It’s not so much a gym environment which I think is what people like,” he said.

“I had a woman come in with Type 1 diabetes ... now she’s run two marathons and five triathlons with me, she’s a legend.”

Alex and Sofia Houldsworth opened Rewired Fitness less than 18 months ago and the gym is already making its debut on this list — at number one.

Despite the number of gyms cropping up on the Gold Coast, the couple have built up a loyal membership base in a short space of time.

Mr Houldsworth said he was humbled to be voted on to the Best of the Gold Coast list.

“One of our members tagged someone and then everyone got involved and voted for us, it’s very exciting,” he said.

“My brother had another gym at Helensvale and when that closed we had a few members come here, but we’ve really just grown through word-of-mouth, everyone says its like their home away from home.”

Mr Houldsworth said there was a community feel among the members at the gym.

“We do strength training with weights two to three times a week and endurance training on the alternating days,” he said.

“The variety keeps it fun and interesting, we do everything from barbells to a bit of gymnastics.

“We’re all so close because we’re going through the same pain.”

Mr Houldsworth said the gym didn’t target one demographic.

“We’re all just people who want to better themselves,” he said.

“We don’t target one type of person.

“One of our members has a mate who’s a bigger boy and he was saying that he feels so comfortable coming to Rewired. he’d never felt comfortable going to a gym before.”
