THREE generations, five family members — all lovers of sport. And all involved in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
While their roles may be across four very different areas, they’re all important links in the same chain, helping to keep things running smoothly.
Tiffany Sharp, originally applied as a volunteer, but jagged a full time role as a Dignitary Program Officer.
HOW GAMES VOLUNTEERS ARE indispensable
“It’s all logistics in an op centre, behind the scenes. Frantic. People everywhere at all times, in multiple venues, making sure they’re positioned correctly, so we know exactly where they are at all times,” she said. “…but I love it.”
Her son, Matthew, was part of the Queen’s Baton Relay, travelling around the country for three months, in the lead up to the Games.
An experience he said he’ll never forget.
“It’s cool, you look at them and say ‘oh I know that person’, but interestingly it was the people who aren’t as well known who were more fascinating,” he said.
“You’d hear some of the most amazing stories, and being able to share the experience with my family, it’s really fantastic.”
For the family’s Patriarch, eighty-year-old Digby Warren, his experience has been predominantly at the velodrome.
“It’s been really exciting, you see a lot of different faces, all ages, coming in and they’re genuinely excited,” he said.
“I wanted to just be part of it all, the rest of the family were in it, so why not me?”
VOLUNTEERS GIVING IT 100 PER CENT
But the family ties don’t stop there, Tiffany’s niece Lisa and her son Hayden were both involved in the Opening Ceremony.
Hayden, a dance performer in the final act with the spectacular Migaloo sculpture. And Lisa, a parent chaperone for some of the performers in the ceremony.
